Back Pain Problems
Low back pain is a highly prevalent condition in the UK, with many adults suffering at some point in their lives, some experiencing recurrent problems (NHS, August 2008)
Back pain is extremely common; however it can be split into two ‘types’ of pain.
The first is described as ‘non specific back pain’, which is the most common. Non specific means the cause of the pain can not be identified or linked to one particular cause. Non specific back pain can be caused by poor posture, excess pressure on the nerve root, over stretching the back muscles during exercise, lifting heavy objects.
‘Specific back pain’ can be caused by a variety of diseases including arthritis, osteoporosis, sciatica and spinal infections. Specfic back pain is rare:
Specific Back Pain accounts for approximately 10-15% of all back pain cases.
Less than 1% of people who develop back pain have a serious cause such as cancer or infection to explain their pain. (DWP, 2009)
