During pregnancy the body undergoes significant transformations including postural changes, hormone fluctuations, weight gain, enlarged breasts and shifting of organs, which can cause aches and pains.
Pregnancy massage is a safe, drug-free, way to minimise and relieve common discomforts and is a popular alternative for pain relief at a time when medications are often limited.
Pregnancy massage is suitable from 14 weeks/ start of 2nd trimester. The massage lasts for one hour, it is full body, not including the bump, and takes place with you lying mainly on your side, comfortably supported by pillows. This is a safe and comfortable position and a lot of clients often fall asleep.
How can pregnancy massage help you?
Pregnancy massage can help to relieve the following pregnancy-related complaints:
- Low back pain/sciatica
- Muscle aches
- Leg cramps
- Upper back pain
How does pregnancy massage differ from regular massage?
If you have had massage previously you will know how wonderful it feels, and this is certainly the case for pregnancy massage too. However there are a few differences to regular massage. For example, the positioning during the massage is important for the safety and well-being of both mother and baby. The therapist will also adjust their strokes and techniques to accommodate the pregnancy. The massage is always tailored to meet individual requirements.
