The Power of Acupuncture

November 13, 2017

Acupuncture has been used as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 4000 years. It is believed the body contains meridians. These are pathways through which the energy of life called Qi (“chi”) flows. Disturbances/blockages in the flow are believed to cause problems such as pain and muscle spasm.

Acupuncture works to stimulate appropriate points along the affected meridian(s) in order to improve Qi flow. The points are usually stimulated by the insertion of very fine, sterile needles.

Scientific evidence shows that acupuncture can reduce pain by stimulating the brain and spinal cord to produce natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins, melatonin (which promotes sleep) and serotonin (to promote well-being).

These chemicals assist the body’s healing processes and offer pain relief as a precursor to other treatments such as manual therapy or exercise in order to aid recovery.

Here at Physiotherapy matters our clinicians are trained in the traditional style of acupuncture and also Dry Needling which can help relieve any of your musculoskeletal issues you may have.

One such patient decided to try acupuncture for the first time after she was sent to Physiotherapy Matters by the Consultants at Nuffield Health.

The lady was sent to our clinic due to her having increased inflammation of the ligaments in her right foot. The consultant had told her that if Physiotherapy did not work then she would need surgery which she did not want to happen.

The lady worked on her feet all day and was the main carer for her husband.  The lady in question had been in so much pain over the last year that her work and her daily life was becoming increasingly difficult. The pain was affecting her so much by the time she was seen in the clinic she was off work due to the severity of the pain in her foot.

Due to the severity of her pain it was decided that acupuncture was the best treatment method. At first the lady was apprehensive as she had not received acupuncture before, but once explained and demonstrated with the small sterile needles she agreed to the treatment.

Over a course of four treatment sessions the ladies pain had rapidly reduced so much so that she was now back walking and back to work.

The patient was amazed at how well the treatment had work and how she was now at a level where she had no pain.

“I cannot believe how well acupuncture has helped my pain. This is the first time in one year that I have been pain free. I can also fully care for my husband without having to stop and rest my foot”. Physiotherapy matter patient 2017.
