Exercise and Fitness Matters!!

April 5, 2018

We are all tending to live longer and this is largely due to a much better understanding of what keeps us fit supported by some beneficial lifestyle changes. Whilst this is the good news, one of the key considerations now concerns keeping our bodies supple and strong.

Keeping as fit as possible helps us to enjoy life to the full as it helps maintain our activity level and independence. It is also so important to help reduce the risk of falling that could result in injury.

When we get older our muscles can weaken and our joints can stiffen. Even simple activities such as getting up from a chair, or walking, can become more difficult and this can be compounded by a reduction in our sense of balance.

It is estimated that 30% of community dwelling people over the age of 65 years and 50% over 80 years, fall at least once every year. The consequence can be both physical and psychological accompanied by an understandable loss of confidence. Whilst we all have different abilities, keeping as strong as possible helps us to avoid falling and this is achieved through regular exercise. Not only does exercise improve joint flexibility, muscle strength and balance but it also improves circulation and our sense of well being.

Here at Physiotherapy Matters we are committed to helping everyone become stronger and fitter. Individual help through one-to-one fitness training programmes are available as well as participation in group fitness sessions.

These activities are energising and enjoyable and the results are proving very beneficial. For more information about what is on offer with Physiotherapy Matters, please visit our website.
