It is a life-threatening medical condition, which needs urgent medical attention. The quicker an individual receives treatment for a stroke, the less damage to the brain is likely to happen.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>If you suspect you or someone else is having a stroke, call 999 immediately and ask for an ambulance.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Strokes affect people in different ways depending on the area effected and the severity.<\/p>\n<p>It can lead to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cognitive problems<\/li>\n<li>Visual problems<\/li>\n<li>Emotional changes<\/li>\n<li>Speech problems<\/li>\n<li>Swallow problems<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Muscular weakness<\/li>\n<li>Gait disturbances<\/li>\n<li>Sensation loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain health conditions increase your risk of having a stroke, these include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>High Cholesterol<\/li>\n<li>Irregular heartbeats, also known as atrial fibrillation.<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What are the signs and symptoms?<\/h3>\n<p>Remember to act\u00a0<strong>F.A.S.T.<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>F \u2013 Face, the face may have dropped on one side, <\/strong>the person may not be able to smile, or their mouth and eyes may have dropped.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A \u2013 Arms, The person may not be able to lift both arms and keep them there<\/strong>, due to weakness and numbness of one arm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>S \u2013 Speech, speech may be slurred<\/strong>, or the person may not be able to talk at all despite being awake. They also may not understand what you are saying to them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>T \u2013 Time to act,\u00a0<\/strong>call 999 if you see any of these signs.<\/p>\n<h3>What treatments are available?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There are many treatments for a stroke which are decided upon by a neurology consultant, this include:<br \/>\nMedication \u2013 Clot dissolvers and anticoagulants<\/li>\n<li>Surgeries and procedures<\/li>\n<li>Therapy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information about the treatments for strokes see the NHS website<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/stroke\/treatment\/\">Stroke &#8211; Treatment &#8211; NHS (www.nhs.uk)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Preventing a stroke<\/h3>\n<p>You can significantly reduce your chance of having a stroke with some simple and health changes to your lifestyle. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eating balance diet<\/li>\n<li>Regularly exercises \u2013 See the Department of Health\u2019s physical activity recommendations.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce alcohol consumption \u2013 less than 14 units per week<\/li>\n<li>Stop smoking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How can Physiotherapy Help?<\/h3>\n<p>Physiotherapists often work within a multidisciplinary team or with other professionals to help patients who have suffered from a stroke. There are specialist neuro physiotherapists with the NHS, who provide specialist treatment and rehabilitation for people who have had a stroke. Neuro physiotherapists can help with improving function, balance, initiating movement and mobility.<\/p>\n<p>If you have had your initial rehabilitation with a specialist neuro physiotherapist and are looking for further improvements in strength, balance or mobility, we can help you by providing you with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physiotherapymatters.co.uk\/older-people-physiotherapy\/services\/older-people-exercise-classes\/\">exercises<\/a> for strengthening, manual therapy to relieve muscle tightness and pain, and can reassess your mobility so you are confident with you mobility and not at risk of a fall.<\/p>\n<p>It is recommended you have a free telephone triage call with one of our physiotherapists to discuss what we can do for you.<\/p>\n<p>As musculoskeletal specialists, we are also here to help with your musculoskeletal injuries.
