What treatment options are available?<\/h3>\n
Ostenil\u00ae is offered at Physiotherapy Matters in 3 different options:<\/p>\n

- Ostenil (standard) 2ml of 1% Sodium Hyaluronate, containing 20mg of HA:<\/strong> this is a course of 3 injections for larger joints (shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, and ankles)<\/li>\n
- Ostenil Plus 2ml of 2% Sodium Hyaluronate, contrianing 40mg of HA:<\/strong> one injection for larger joint, usually delivered as a top up<\/li>\n
- Ostenil Mini 1ml of 1% Sodium Hyaluronate, containing 10mg of HA:<\/strong> this is a course of 3 injections for smaller joints (thumbs and big toes)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
What can I expect if I decide to have treatment with Ostenil\u00ae?<\/h3>\n
Your physiotherapist will first perform an initial assessment. The various Ostenil\u00ae injection as well as alternate injection options will be discussed after the assessment to decide which is best for your joint. If it is jointly agreed to procced with Ostenil\u00ae, it will be injected directly into the joint affected by osteoarthritis<\/a>. This will usually be a course of 3 injections per treated joint, delivered once a week for 3 weeks if you decided on Ostenil\u00ae standard for larger joints or mini for smaller joints.<\/p>\n
An Ostenil\u00ae Plus injection will be a single injection, usually used as a top up for larger joints but can be used as a first injection option. You will probably not notice any benefits immediately after the first injection, but you should gradually start to feel less pain and stiffness over the next few weeks. The improvement in your symptoms should last for several months, depending partly on the number of injections you\u00a0have. You can expect the benefit from injection to persist for up to 12 months but vary between 6-12 months depending on stage of arthritis and activity levels.<\/p>\n
Once the effects of the first course of injections wear off, you can, if you choose, have another course of 3 Ostenil\u00ae injections, or a single Ostenil\u00ae Plus injection for larger joints, and continue to have follow up injections whenever necessary.<\/p>\n
Are there any side effects?<\/h3>\n
The hyaluronic acid in Ostenil\u00ae is very pure and is manufactured using a process called fermentation. It contains no animal proteins, which means that it is very unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. Ostenil\u00ae has been given to thousands of patients and has not been found to cause any serious side effects. Some side effects can be:<\/p>\n

- There is a very small risk of infection with any injection.<\/li>\n
- Post injection swelling, bruising and soreness at the injection site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

1. How long does the injection take to work?<\/strong>
\nYou can expect to feel some relieve from 2-4 weeks. We expect you should feel maximum relieve at 6 weeks after your injection. It depends on the severity of the joint arthritis.
\n2. Will I need more than one injection?<\/strong>
\nIf you decide to have an Ostenil\u00ae Standard injection you will receive one injection per week over a course of 3 weeks. Many patients get several months of relief from an Ostenil\u00ae injection. You can get a top-up injection in a few months if needed. Your physiotherapist will discuss the deferent options and on what is best for your joint.
\n3. Do I need to rest after the injection?<\/strong>
\nYou can continue with your normal daily activities and tasks, including driving straight after the injection. We, however, recommend 48 hours of rest from strenuous exercise or heavy lifting.
\n4. How long does it last?<\/strong>
\nIt depends on the severity of the osteoarthritis in the joint. Many patients experience a relieve for 6 months or longer.
\n5. Is Ostenil\u00ae safe?<\/strong>
\nYes. Ostenil\u00ae injections are classed as generally safe and it contains no animal proteins, which means that it is very unlikely to cause an allergic reactions.
