Sinovial injections are best suited for patient’s with mild to moderate levels of osteoarthritis in joints like the knee, ankle or shoulder. Sinovial injections are a Hyaluronic Acid injection assisting in relieving pain and improving joint function.
What are Sinovial injections?
Sinovial injections are a well-established Hyaluronic Acid (HA) injection assisting in relieving pain and improving joint function in patients with osteoarthritis. It is commonly used in patients with arthritis to the knee, shoulder, thumb, big toe or ankle joints in combination with physiotherapy for best results. Sinovial is different to most other HA injection options in that it contains a hybrid of both high and low molecular weight HA. This is believed to closely match natural synovial fluid found within joints.
Additionally, Sinovial injections have non-animal origin. The product is synthesised via bacterial fermentation; this reduces the risk of allergic reactions. The injections are well tolerated and suitable for repeat use.
The adaptability of Sinovial injections, makes them ideal for patients suffering from arthritis in multiple joints. Which means it provides a more patient specific treatment approach compared to other products.
What treatment options are available?
Two options of Sinovial injections are available at Physiotherapy Matters
- Sinovial HL 64: Which contains 64mg of hybrid HA, 32mg of low and 32mg of high molecular weight within a 2ml single injection, used for larger joints such as shoulders, knees and ankles.
- Sinovial HL 32: Which contains 32mg of hybrid HA, 16mg of low and 16mg of high molecular weight within a 1ml single injection, used for smaller joints such as elbows, thumbs and big toes.
Both injections are usually used as a single injection but on occasions require a second injection if some benefit is noticed after 4 weeks but not significant improvement. The effects of the injection usually last at least 6 months, often longer and can continue for 12-18 months dependant on the level of arthritis and the level of activity you undertake.
What can I expect if I decide to have treatment using Sinovial Injections?
The treatment experience with Sinovial injection procedure is quick and minimally invasive.
Your physiotherapist will first perform an initial assessment. Depending on the option chosen, it may be a single injection or a series over a few weeks. The injections are done in our clinic, without sedation and the patient is required to stay for 10-15 mins after the injection in the waiting area prior leaving. This is to make sure that the patient is feeling fine post-injection. Additionally, the patient should keep to light activities for 24-48 hours post injection.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. How do the injections work?
Sinovial is a hyaluronic acid (HA) injection which has a combination of both high and low molecular weight HA. The low molecular weight provides lubrication and nourishment to the joint. The high molecular weight provides shock absorption to the joint. Therefore, Sinovial injections aim to restore the natural mechanical properties of synovial fluid, thereby reducing joint pain and improving function.
2. Is this the same as corticosteroids?
No, corticosteroid injections are anti-inflammatory medicines that are delivered directly into a painful joint. All corticosteroids are absorbed systemically and may have a range of side effects.
3. Are there any risks or side effects?
Side effects can include temporary pain, swelling and stiffness at the injection site. As with any injection there is a very small risk of infection.
4. How many injections will I need?
Your physiotherapist will discuss how many injections they recommend, but usually it is 1 injection, in some cases your clinician may recommend up to 2-3 injections.
5. How soon until I feel results?
The research shows that you could experience pain relief within the first week after your injection.
6. Are there any interactions of this injection on my other medical conditions?
Hyaluronic acid has not shown any interaction with medical conditions or medications to date.
7. Is it safe to have surgery after the injection?
If you are under a consultant or on a waiting list to have surgery on the injected joint in the next 6 months, please inform your physiotherapist about this as some surgeons prefer for you not to have any injections in a joint that you are having surgery on for 6 months prior to the injection.
