At Physiotherapy Matters, our Women’s Health Physiotherapy service if delivered by our Chartered Physiotherapist Emma, with a specialist interest in women’s health, and our Pre and Post Natal Pilates service is delivered by our Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist Kristi.

What we can help with?

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Stress urinary incontinence
  • Prolapse symptoms
  • Pregnancy related pain
  • Postnatal recovery
  • Abdominal separation (diastasis recti)
  • Return to exercise following childbirth
  • Persistent pelvic pain

The pelvic floor and symptoms associated with it are often affected by factors that can be seen externally. The pelvic floor works as part of a system with your diaphragm, deep abdominal muscles, and rib cage. Your lower limb mechanics (how the foot/knee/hip move, stabilise, and respond to impact) also affect pelvic floor function. If one or more of these elements is not working as well as it could be, this will affect how well pressure is distributed throughout the body and onto the pelvic floor muscles and pelvic organs. The pelvic floor should be responsive and autonomic, meaning we shouldn’t have to think about contracting or relaxing the pelvic floor in daily movements.

At Physiotherapy Matters, following taking a history of your concern, these factors are considered in a functional assessment. This includes assessing movements such as squats, single leg squats, step ups, bending/hinging, thoracic mobility, breathing mechanics, and a gait assessment. We will assess passive movements of the hip and other joints if appropriate. Palpation of joints and surrounding muscles may be carried out if this is needed depending on the problem.

Rather than focusing on the pelvic floor in isolation, by looking at the whole system, we can understand what factors are contributing to pelvic floor related symptoms, pelvic or back pain, and understand the root cause of the problem. This ensures that the treatment plan is specific to you and your goals.

FAQs

What does the assessment consist of?

A 60 minute initial assessment and treatment session, in which a history of your problem area/concern will be taken, and a thorough assessment carried out. A treatment plan will then be discussed. You can then book a package of 5 treatment sessions to go through the treatment plan with the guidance of the physio.

Is an internal examination carried out?

No. Although an internal assessment can be beneficial, it is not always needed. Our assessments focus on what can be seen externally by looking at your movement patterns, breathing techniques, and joint position and mobility.

As internal examinations are not part of the assessment, it is recommended that you attend your GP initially for a diagnosis of prolapse if you are experiencing prolapse symptoms.

Will I be given exercises?

Yes. Individualised exercises will be prescribed based on the assessment findings.

Who can benefit from women’s health physiotherapy?

  • Women experiencing pelvic floor symptoms. This may include pain, stress urinary incontinence, and symptoms of a diagnosed prolapse.
  • Pregnant women looking to alleviate pain, improve function, and continue or start an exercise programme with physio-led guidance.
  • Post natal women – whether to improve day to day symptoms and daily activities, restore pelvic floor function, or return to exercise – the women’s health service offers expert guidance on movement and strengthening exercises tailored to you.

What should I wear for an assessment?

It can be helpful for the physiotherapist to be able to assess your movements without restriction – loose trousers that can be rolled up, leggings or shorts, and a vest top or crop top if possible.
