Avoid Winter golf injuries with Pilates.

Winter golf is not for everyone; some people are turning to the preparations for 2018 season; others continue to brave the elements North East golf can present us with.  Some of us do both!

It’s important to maintain your golf game throughout the year and many people are adding Pilates to the benefits of golf with some Pilates training to enhance their next season.

At Physiotherapy Matters we have an increase in clients looking to get rehabilitation for injuries that have presented during the summer months as well as clients attending for one to one Pilates rehabilitation.

We have been out and about running Pilates classes with the Ladies at Hexham golf club, we’ve started with a complete beginners course and improvements have been shown in posture and swing amongst the class.  Many of the Ladies had never attended a Pilates for golf session.

Golfer Case Study

I have recently been working on a one to one basis with a client, who’s a busy father and business director as well as an avid golfer.

“I really don’t have time for neck and shoulder pain. I’ve played with niggles for a few months now.    Unfortunately, after 2-3 weeks off the course the injury progressed.”

After some initial advice and treatment, we progressed direct into Pilates based exercises following Physiotherapy Matters 6-week golfer programme.

Here’s what my client said after each weekly session:

Week 1 – Improved postural awareness

Week 2 –  Flexibility has improved and I can touch my toes

Week 3 – I’m back on the Range hitting a solid 7 iron

Week 4 –  I played 18 holes and my driving has improved in distance and accuracy

Week 5 –  I’m even doing these exercises at home

Week 6 –  I have forgotten about the back pain I had 6 weeks ago.

 

3 months on he continues to play golf twice a week and manages regular rehab sessions, pain to the neck and shoulders has not returned and he is now feeling stronger, more flexible and more confident going into the winter golfing season.
