What is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that stretch like a hammock between the tailbone (coccyx) and pubic bone. These muscles support the bladder and bowel movement in males and females by preventing leaking of urine and faeces. In females it also supports the uterus, vagina, and the baby during pregnancy.

These muscles are also important for sexual function in both men and women. In men they are important for erectile function and ejaculation. In women, voluntary contractions and squeezing of the pelvic floor contributes to sexual excitement and orgasm.

The pelvic floor also plays an important role in supporting the SIJ (Sacro Iliac Joint / pelvic joints) and the lower back, providing a stability and are a vital part of the ‘core’ muscles.

Pelvic Health and Physiotherapy

Pelvic health physiotherapy is the therapeutic treatment of disorders affecting the pelvis. This can include incontinence (urine and faeces), prolapse, pelvic pain, SIJ pain, lower back pain, and constipation. Your physiotherapist would focus on restoring strength, function, and movement within the pelvic area using treatments such as:

  • Pelvic floor exercises
  • Manual therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Education and advice
  • Pilates

What is Pelvic Health and how to support your Pelvis?

Supporting pelvic health involves adopting a healthy lifestyle and engaging in exercises that target the pelvic muscles, such as specific pelvic floor exercises and Pilates.
