May is National Walking Month!

Walking offers numerous health benefits, and we are participating in the campaign to encourage people to get moving!
Walking is an excellent way to improve heart health, lower high blood pressure, and promote healthy joints. If high-intensity workouts are challenging for you, walking can be a fantastic option to stay in shape and maintain good health.Consider walking to work, school, or when running errands instead of driving. Small changes can lead to the development of long-lasting healthy habits that will enhance your overall well-being!

During National Walking Month, why not challenge yourself to explore new walking routes, invite friends or family to join you, or set personal goals to increase your daily step count? Remember, every journey begins with a single step, so lace up your shoes, step outside, and let the rhythm of your walk guide you towards a healthier and happier lifestyle. Happy walking!

Sun Awareness Week

From May 6th to May 12th, Sun Awareness Week takes place to highlight the importance of sun protection and raise awareness about skin cancer.

Did you know that individuals with arthritis can also be vulnerable to overexposure to the sun?  Those suffering from arthritis when overexposed can lead to joint flare-ups, worsening symptoms. If you’re out enjoying the outdoors or participating in National Walking Month, remember to limit your exposure, wear protective gear, and stay hydrated!

Arthritis is a debilitating condition, it is something we understand well at Physiotherapy Matters. For years, we have been assisting individuals in managing arthritis symptoms. By incorporating physiotherapy into your routine, you can maintain healthy joints and stay active when combined with other treatments.

Stress Awareness

Mental Health Awareness Week runs from May 13th to May 19th, focusing on the theme “Movement: moving more for our mental health.”
Engaging in regular exercise is crucial for mental well-being, as it can boost energy levels, self-esteem, and overall wellness. Despite challenges people may face in exercising, a small daily effort can make a significant difference and  who know what new hobbies you could be introduced too!

Mental health struggles can be overwhelming, underscoring the importance of daily support and prioritising mental well-being. Remember, no one is alone, and we can all help one another by not only supporting mental health but also maintaining physical health. Why not take a walk with a family member, friend, or colleague during your lunch break? Remember, taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. So, let’s all take a step towards better well-being by moving more together!

Exercise of the Month

Calf Raises

The calf raise exercise is a great movement that helps strengthen your calves, Its a great option for those that wish to strengthen their legs and improve their balance. You don’t have to use a weight but to increase strength you can hold a set weights.

  1. Stand on a flat surface
  2. Lift your heels off the floor , So you are standing on the front part of your feet
  3. Hold the position for aslong as you are comfortable

Slowly return to the starting position.

As we grow older, various factors can lead to a decline in our balance and strength. That’s why, at Physiotherapy Matters, we offer a small group class called Stable and Able. This class is perfect for individuals looking to enhance their balance and mobility.

Our older people exercise classes involve a combination of low-impact cardiovascular, resistance, balance, and functional exercises. All exercises are modifiable so are appropriate for all levels and you will be supervised by a Chartered Physiotherapist throughout the class.

Remember – Your first class is FREE!

No matter whether your condition was caused by a sport, work accident or otherwise, we welcome the chance to serve you.
