Great North Run 2026: Recovery and What to Do If You’re Injured

September 9, 2026

Finishing the Great North Run is a massive achievement. It doesn’t matter if it was your first half marathon or a personal best. You’ve worked hard to get across the finish line on race day. Once the excitement has settled it is important to give yourself time to recover. Rest, hydration, gentle movement and sports massage can support your Great North Run recovery. And if you’re experiencing pain that doesn’t feel like your usual post-race soreness it might be time to book a physiotherapy assessment.

What Happens to Your Body After a Half Marathon?

Running 13.1 miles puts a lot of stress on your muscles and joints. It’s completely normal to experience:

  • Muscle soreness and stiffness
  • Tired or heavy legs
  • Calf or hamstring tightness
  • General fatigue
  • Mild aches following the race

This can be more noticeable over the first few days after the race. So, in terms of your Great North Run recovery, how can you tell the difference between normal post-race soreness and an injury? General muscle soreness should gradually improve with rest and gentle movement. However, if you have sharp or worsening pain, swelling or difficulty walking it could be beneficial to get it assessed.

Massage or Physiotherapy Assessment?

A sports massage can help you recover after the race if you are feeling stiff or sore. After months of training and race day it’s common for runners to feel tight and fatigued.

A sports massage can help to:

  • Reduce the feeling of tight muscles
  • Ease post-exercise soreness
  • Support your recovery

If you have developed a sports injury, a physiotherapist can also give you advice on:

  • Managing daily activities that are making things worse
  • What you can do to help your recovery
  • When it’s safe to start running again
  • How to avoid the problem becoming long term or coming back
