Physiotherapy Matters launch week day 4: Sports injuries

As part of our celebrations to officially launch our new clinical site at Regent Centre, Gosforth, we’re exploring the top 5 common aches, pains and conditions suffered in the UK which we treat here at Physiotherapy Matters. Today, we’re exploring sports injuries.
Sport injuries are more common in the summer months in line with many people starting healthy living programmes, for example commencing dieting and exercise prior to upcoming holidays, with the latter often causing people to need to visit our clinic.
What can cause sports injuries?
When it comes to exercising, many people take on too much too soon which results in the body overloading and this often leads to injury. For instance, despite not exercising for months many will attempt long runs or strenuous exercise regimes which can lead to musculoskeletal pain for a few days afterwards.
Other common causes of sports injuries include:
- Not warming up before exercising
- Not using the correct equipment
- Poor technique
How to treat sports injuries…
As soon as you feel pain when exercising, you should stop immediately as continuing to exercise whilst injured may cause further damage. Minor injuries can be treated at home with resting and painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication.
Serious injuries such as ligament or cartilage damage or broken bones will require specialist treatment from doctors and physiotherapists.
Preventing sports injuries…
Although preventing sports injuries isn’t always possible, as accidents happen, you can take steps to reduce the risk such as:
- Warming up before starting to exercise
- Using the recommended equipment and safety gear such as helmets, padding and guards
- Learning the correct positions and techniques
