Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessment

August 14, 2019

If workers use display screen equipment (DSE) on a daily basis as part of their work continuously for an hour or more, employers are required by law to complete a work place assessment. Employees who use DSE may report a variety of aches and pains such as back ache or eye pain. The Health and Safety Display Screen Regulations (1992) are in place to highlight employer’s responsibility to protect any workers who are DSE habitual users and try to minimise these risks.

 A DSE assessment will;

  • Analyse work stations to assess any areas of potential risk.
  • Provide suggestions to help minimise these risks.
  • Ensure workplaces meet the minimum specified requirements.
  • Provide details on how to plan work activities to include breaks or changes of activity.
  • Give additional information on eye and eyesight testing entitlements.
  • Provide information and training on posture, how to use equipment correctly, when and how to report any discomfort

Not only are display screen equipment assessments a legal requirement but they can help to prevent and alleviate musculoskeletal disorders, improve concentration levels and increase productivity of staff. DSE assessments are generally in expensive to the business as the risks can be controlled using low cost controls e.g. A well-designed work station or simple changes to an activity.
A growing number of organisations are adopting an in house approach to deliver training to colleagues by having their own in house assessor. This method of delivery can be cost saving, convenient and customisable to the individual employee’s and work places needs. It is also a fantastic way to encourage team building in the workplace by giving an awareness of others job roles and encourage interaction and communication between staff.
Physiotherapy Matters have physiotherapists specialising in Occupational Health with significant experience in delivering DSE Assessor Training. They teach nominated employees from a business how to carry out safe, effective workplace and ergonomic assessments. These courses are not aimed at individuals with a medical background so anyone is welcome to take part. The sessions are part presentation and part practical ensuring that participants both learn the relevant theory as well as have a chance to practice their skills and build their confidence.
